We explored how a middle class might be out of range for many of us in Boston [link here]. But for those adventurous among us, there are still ways to cheap hack your way to a low cost of living in the city. Here’s how you can live in Boston for less than $650 a month.
Of course, we are assuming that you are single, don’t have a car, no kids, and have a job that covers your health insurance.
Housing: $400
Even in an expensive city such as Boston, you can still find a room for $400 a month with utilities and parking included! This 2-bed apartment is nestled between Roxbury and Dorchester. Trust me… it’s one of the less sketchy places we’ve found on the interweb.
Transportation: $90
Vehicle prices have risen as much as 30% in the last 3 years (thanks to supply chain disruption). Luckily, Boston has one of the most extensive (and oldest) public transit system that covers most of eastern Massachusetts. For $90 a month, the T pass will get you access to the subway, the buses and more. Some companies may even subsidize your pass.
Food: $150
Finally, the cost of food for one person in Boston averages to $340 a month. However, if you’re adventurous enough, there are non-profit or discounted food pantries you can get a month’s worth of grocery for less than $150. This is assuming you’re not eating out AT ALL or shopping swanky grocery joints.
So, for a grant total of $640 a month, you can live a pretty monastic but affordable life in Boston. What do you think?
